Britney Spears' Comeback
61
The career of Britney Spears is tabloid fodder. Controversy has followed Brittany Spears everywhere, from her kiss with Madonna during the 2003 VMA music awards to her tumultuous marriage to Kevin Federline, and shaving her head. Arguably, Brittany ha s brought some of this on herself, however, she is working hard to salvage her career. Will Britney Spears' comeback be successful?

Unlike other artists, Brittany Spears' Comeback is going back to basics. Many artists, especially ones returning from controversy, try to reinvent themselves. While some fans enjoy watching the new "stage monkey," most want to see the performer as themselves. Often, ticket sales suffer because fans do not like the new persona; however, Brittany Spears is not following their lead. "Owner of Hollywood's Millennium Dance Complex, where Britney has been intensively training for the past month, revealed the 25-year-old has been working on material resembling her earlier hits" (M & C, 2008).
Will Capitalizing On Controversary Work?
Brittany Spears' comeback is trying to capitalize on her controversy. Songs like "Blur" and "Who are you/What'd we do?" have any eerie autobiographical tone to them. Chicago Tribune's Shelby Lynn describes "Blur" as, "the aftermath of what sounds like a drug- or alcohol-fueled night that ends with the narrator passing out after a date-rape encounter" (Lynn, 2008). Such songs may prove successful for Britney. After, everyone loves watching a good train wreck.
Britney's New CD "Circus"
Britney's new CD "Circus" appears to be making a stellar impression. In a recent article, Newsday's Glenn Gamboa could not stop gushing about "Circus." Gamboa writes, "'Circus' is overflowing with smart, savvy dance pop -- the kind of hits that she has hinted at in the past with "Toxic" and "I'm a Slave 4 U" -- that creates the perfect escapist soundtrack for these downsized times" (Newsday, 2008).
These reviews are translating into sales. Amazon.com ranks "Circus" #9 in the music category. Britney Spears' Comeback will continue with a Spring 2009 tour. While no details or dates have been released, past trends point to a rather promising future. While, "Blackout" and the accompanying tour were not raging successes, they still were very profitable. Britney Spears previous album "Blackout" made it to #21 in the Top 100 Album list (BritneySpearsBlackout.com, 2008). The accompanying tour also was financially profitable. "Circus" is rapidly outselling her previous comeback attempt "Blackout". Should this trend continue, Britney Spears' 2009 Comeback tour might boast hefty ticket sales.
Will Britney Spears' comeback be successful? All indicators point to yes. Britney Spears has done everything to produce controversy; however, she is working just as hard to comeback. Her new album "Circus" is receiving rave reviews and is already #9 on Amazon.com. Spears are planning a Spring 2009 tour that already has fans salivating to buy tickets. No one can predict the future, but I would put your money on Britney Spears next year. She appears to have turned controversy and multiple missteps into a successful comeback.
